Meaning of an Essay
An essay is a piece of writing that presents and develops a writer’s ideas on a particular topic in a clear, organised manner, usually made up of an introduction, body paragraphs and a conclusion.
Types of Essays
- Narrative essay – tells a story, often based on personal experience
- Descriptive essay – paints a vivid picture of a person, place or thing using sensory details
- Expository essay – explains or gives information about a topic in a factual, straightforward way
- Argumentative (persuasive) essay – presents a point of view and tries to convince the reader to agree
Structure of a Good Essay
- Introduction – introduces the topic and states the main idea (thesis)
- Body – develops the main idea through several paragraphs, each with one central point supported by examples or evidence
- Conclusion – summarises the main points and restates the writer’s position or overall message
Techniques for Effective Essay Writing
- Plan with an outline before writing
- Use clear topic sentences to begin each paragraph
- Support points with relevant examples and details
- Use linking words (however, therefore, in addition) to connect ideas smoothly
- Proofread for grammar, spelling and punctuation errors before submitting
