The Five Generations of Computers

• First generation (1940s-1950s): used vacuum tubes; large, expensive and generated much heat.
• Second generation (late 1950s-1960s): used transistors; smaller, faster and more reliable.
• Third generation (1960s-1970s): used integrated circuits (ICs), further reducing size and cost.
• Fourth generation (1970s-present): used microprocessors, enabling personal computers.
• Fifth generation (present-future): based on artificial intelligence, aiming for machines that can reason and learn.
