Meaning and Importance of Agricultural Science

Agricultural Science is the branch of science that deals with the cultivation of crops, the rearing of animals, and the management of the soil and other resources for the production of food, fibre, and raw materials useful to man. It combines knowledge from biology, chemistry, and economics to help farmers produce enough food for the growing population. In Nigeria, agriculture remains one of the most important economic activities, employing a large percentage of the population and contributing significantly to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

As a subject studied from Junior Secondary School through to Senior Secondary School in preparation for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and later WAEC/NECO, Agricultural Science introduces students to the scientific principles behind crop and animal production, and prepares them for further study or a career in agriculture.

Importance of Agriculture

  • Provision of food: Agriculture supplies staple foods such as yam, cassava, rice, maize, and vegetables that sustain human life.
  • Source of income and employment: Millions of Nigerians earn their living from farming, animal rearing, fishing, and agro-allied businesses.
  • Provision of raw materials: Agro-based industries such as textile, food processing, and leather industries depend on farm produce like cotton, cassava, and hides.
  • Foreign exchange earnings: Export crops such as cocoa, groundnut, rubber, and palm produce earn Nigeria foreign currency.
  • Provision of animal feed: By-products of crop production such as maize bran and cassava peels serve as feed for livestock.
  • Medicinal value: Many crops and plants used in agriculture also have medicinal properties useful in treating diseases.

Branches of Agricultural Science

Agricultural Science is a broad field made up of several specialised branches, including:

  • Crop Production/Agronomy: The study of growing and managing crops for food, fibre, and other uses.
  • Animal Production/Husbandry: The rearing and management of livestock such as poultry, cattle, goats, and pigs.
  • Soil Science: The study of soil formation, classification, and management for improved productivity.
  • Agricultural Economics: Deals with the economic principles applied to farm management, marketing, and rural development.
  • Agricultural Engineering: Concerned with the design and use of farm tools, machinery, and structures.
  • Fisheries: The study of fish production and management in ponds, rivers, and the sea.

  • Soil: The fertility, texture, and structure of soil affect plant growth and yield.
  • Labour: The availability of skilled and unskilled workers affects the scale of farming operations.
  • Capital: Money is needed to purchase inputs such as seeds, fertilizers, tools, and to pay for labour.
  • Land: The size, location, and topography of farmland influence the type and scale of agricultural activities.
  • Government policies: Subsidies, loans, and agricultural programmes can encourage or discourage farming.

Common Farm Tools and Their Uses

Farm tools make agricultural work easier and more efficient. Some common tools include:

  • Hoe: Used for tilling, weeding, and making ridges or mounds.
  • Cutlass/Machete: Used for clearing bushes and cutting grasses.
  • Rake: Used for gathering fallen leaves, grasses, and levelling seed beds.
  • Wheelbarrow: Used for conveying farm produce, soil, and manure from one place to another.
  • Watering can: Used for irrigating young plants and nursery beds.
  • Sickle: Used for harvesting grain crops such as rice and guinea corn.

Farmers must handle tools with care, keep cutting edges sharp, and store them in a dry place to prevent rusting and prolong their lifespan.
