Who is a Citizen?

A citizen is a legally recognised member of a country, entitled to its protection and enjoying certain rights, while also owing certain duties and responsibilities to the state. In Nigeria, citizenship can be acquired by birth, registration, or naturalisation.

What are Human Rights?

Human rights are basic freedoms and protections that belong to every person simply because they are human, regardless of nationality, gender, religion, or any other status. The Nigerian Constitution guarantees fundamental human rights under Chapter IV.

Examples of Fundamental Human Rights in Nigeria

• Right to life: no one should be unlawfully deprived of their life.
• Right to dignity of the human person: freedom from torture and inhuman treatment.
• Right to personal liberty: freedom from unlawful arrest or detention.
• Right to fair hearing: the right to a fair trial before an impartial court.
• Right to freedom of expression: the right to hold and share opinions.
• Right to freedom of movement: the right to move freely within the country.
• Right to freedom of religion: the right to practise any religion of choice.
• Right to education: access to basic education.

Duties and Responsibilities of a Citizen

Along with rights come duties. A responsible citizen should:

• Obey the laws of the country.
• Pay taxes honestly and promptly.
• Respect the rights of other citizens.
• Vote during elections and participate in civic activities.
• Protect public property and the environment.
• Defend the country when necessary.
• Respect the national symbols, such as the flag and anthem.

Balancing Rights and Duties

Rights and duties go hand in hand — enjoying a right often comes with a responsibility. For example, the right to freedom of expression comes with the duty not to spread false or harmful information about others. A society functions well when citizens both claim their rights and fulfil their responsibilities.
