What is Democracy?

Democracy is a system of government in which power belongs to the people, who exercise it either directly or through elected representatives. The word comes from Greek: demos (people) and kratos (power/rule) — meaning "rule by the people".

Types of Democracy

• Direct democracy: citizens participate directly in making decisions, common in very small communities (e.g. a referendum where citizens vote directly on an issue).
• Representative (indirect) democracy: citizens elect representatives to make decisions on their behalf. This is the system practised in Nigeria and most modern countries.

Good governance refers to the effective, transparent, and accountable management of a country's affairs for the benefit of its citizens. Key principles include accountability, transparency, participation, rule of law, and responsiveness to citizens' needs.

Benefits of Democracy and Good Governance

A well-functioning democracy with good governance leads to political stability, protection of citizens' rights, economic development, and public trust in government institutions. Citizens can hold leaders accountable through elections, the courts, and free press.

Challenges to Democracy

Democracy can face challenges such as electoral malpractice (rigging), corruption, weak institutions, and low civic participation. Overcoming these challenges requires active, informed citizens and strong democratic institutions.
