What is Friction?
Friction is the force that opposes the relative motion (or attempted motion) between two surfaces that are in contact. It acts along the surface of contact, in a direction opposite to the motion or intended motion of the object.
Types of Friction
- Static friction: the friction that must be overcome before a stationary object can start moving.
- Kinetic (sliding) friction: the friction that acts on an object already in motion, sliding over a surface.
- Rolling friction: the friction that opposes the motion of a rolling object, such as a wheel or ball; it is generally weaker than sliding friction.
- Fluid friction (drag): the friction experienced by an object moving through a fluid, such as air or water.
Factors Affecting Friction
- Nature of the surfaces: rougher surfaces produce more friction than smooth or polished ones.
- Normal force (weight): friction increases as the force pressing the two surfaces together increases.
- Lubrication: adding a lubricant such as oil or grease reduces friction between surfaces.
Friction does not depend significantly on the area of contact between the two surfaces.
Advantages of Friction
- Enables walking, since friction between our shoes and the ground prevents slipping.
- Allows vehicle tyres to grip the road for movement and braking.
- Makes it possible to hold and grip objects.
- Allows nails and screws to stay fixed in wood or walls.
Disadvantages of Friction
- Causes wear and tear of moving machine parts.
- Generates unwanted heat, which can damage engines and machinery.
- Reduces the efficiency of machines by wasting energy as heat.
Methods of Reducing Friction
- Using lubricants such as oil or grease between moving parts.
- Using ball bearings or rollers to change sliding friction into rolling friction.
- Polishing or smoothing rough surfaces.
- Streamlining the shape of objects that move through air or water, to reduce drag.
