Livestock Farming and Animal Husbandry Practices

What is Livestock Farming?

Livestock farming (animal husbandry) is the branch of agriculture concerned with raising animals for food, income, and other products such as milk, eggs, wool, and hides.

Types of Livestock

  • Ruminants: cattle, sheep and goats, which chew the cud and can digest fibrous plant material.
  • Non-ruminants (monogastrics): pigs, poultry and rabbits, with a simple single-chambered stomach.
  • Poultry: birds such as chickens, turkeys and ducks, reared mainly for eggs and meat.

Systems of Livestock Management

  • Extensive system: animals graze freely over a large area of land with minimal housing.
  • Intensive system: animals are confined in pens, cages or houses and fed a controlled diet, allowing close monitoring.
  • Semi-intensive system: a combination, where animals graze part of the day and are housed and fed supplementary feed at other times.

Basic Animal Husbandry Practices

  • Feeding: providing a balanced diet of energy, protein, vitamins and minerals suited to the animal's age and purpose.
  • Housing: providing shelter that protects animals from bad weather, predators and disease.
  • Health care: routine vaccination, deworming, and prompt treatment of sick animals to prevent disease spread.
  • Breeding: selecting healthy parent stock to improve the quality and productivity of future generations.

Importance of Livestock Farming

Livestock farming provides a major source of protein (meat, milk and eggs) in the diet, generates income and employment for farmers, and supplies raw materials such as hides, skin and wool for industry. Animal manure is also a valuable organic fertilizer that improves soil fertility for crop production, showing how livestock and crop farming can support each other on a mixed farm.
