What is Classification?
Classification is the process of grouping living things into categories based on their shared characteristics. It helps scientists study, identify and understand the relationships between different organisms.
Why Do We Classify Living Things?
- It makes the study of the huge variety of organisms more organized and manageable.
- It shows evolutionary relationships between organisms.
- It helps in the correct identification and naming of species.
- It aids communication among scientists worldwide using a standard system.
The Five Kingdom System
- Kingdom Monera: simple, single-celled organisms without a true nucleus, e.g. bacteria.
- Kingdom Protista: mostly single-celled organisms with a true nucleus, e.g. amoeba and paramecium.
- Kingdom Fungi: organisms that absorb food from their surroundings and reproduce by spores, e.g. mushrooms and moulds.
- Kingdom Plantae: multicellular organisms that make their own food by photosynthesis, e.g. trees, grasses and ferns.
- Kingdom Animalia: multicellular organisms that feed on other organisms and can usually move, e.g. mammals, birds, fish and insects.
Basis of Classification
Organisms are classified using features such as cell structure (presence or absence of a nucleus), mode of nutrition, body organization, and method of reproduction. Within each kingdom, organisms are further divided into smaller groups: phylum, class, order, family, genus and species, with species being the smallest and most specific unit.
