What is Cell Division?
Cell division is the process by which a parent cell divides into two or more daughter cells. It is essential for growth, repair of damaged tissue, and reproduction in living organisms.
Mitosis
Mitosis is a type of cell division that produces two daughter cells that are genetically identical to the parent cell, each with the same number of chromosomes.
- Purpose: growth, replacement of worn-out or damaged cells, and asexual reproduction in some organisms.
- Result: two identical diploid daughter cells.
Meiosis
Meiosis is a type of cell division that produces four daughter cells, each with half the number of chromosomes of the parent cell.
- Purpose: production of sex cells (gametes) — sperm and egg cells — for sexual reproduction.
- Result: four genetically different haploid daughter cells.
Key Differences Between Mitosis and Meiosis
- Mitosis produces 2 cells; meiosis produces 4 cells.
- Mitosis daughter cells are genetically identical; meiosis daughter cells are genetically varied.
- Mitosis maintains the chromosome number; meiosis halves the chromosome number.
- Mitosis occurs in body (somatic) cells; meiosis occurs in reproductive (germ) cells.
Importance of Cell Division
Without mitosis, organisms could not grow or repair damaged tissue. Without meiosis, sexual reproduction and genetic variation — which allows species to adapt over time — would not be possible. Together, these two processes are fundamental to the continuity and diversity of life.
