Common Methods of Separating Mixtures in Chemistry
What is a Mixture?
A mixture is a combination of two or more substances that are not chemically bonded together, so each substance keeps its own properties and can be separated by physical means.
Common Separation Techniques
- Filtration: separates an insoluble solid from a liquid using a filter paper or membrane, e.g. separating sand from water.
- Evaporation: separates a dissolved solid from a solution by heating off the liquid, leaving the solid behind, e.g. obtaining salt from salt solution.
- Distillation: separates a liquid from a solution, or two miscible liquids with different boiling points, by heating, evaporating and then condensing the vapour.
- Decantation: carefully pouring off a liquid from a settled solid or from one liquid layer to another, without disturbing the sediment.
- Sublimation: separates a substance that turns directly from solid to gas (and back) from a mixture, e.g. separating iodine from sand.
- Chromatography: separates substances in a mixture based on how fast they move through a medium, often used to separate dyes or pigments.
- Magnetic separation: uses a magnet to remove magnetic substances (like iron filings) from a non-magnetic mixture.
Choosing the Right Method
The method chosen depends on the physical properties of the components in the mixture — such as particle size, solubility, density, boiling point, and magnetism. For example, filtration works when particle sizes differ greatly, while distillation is needed when separating liquids with different boiling points.
Importance of Separation Techniques
Separation techniques are widely used in everyday life and industry: purifying drinking water, refining crude oil into petrol and other products, extracting salt from seawater, and purifying drugs. Understanding these methods helps us obtain pure substances from naturally occurring mixtures.
