What is Computer Ethics?

Computer ethics refers to the set of moral principles that guide the appropriate and responsible use of computers, the internet, and digital technology.

Principles of Good Computer Ethics

  • Do not use a computer to harm other people or their data.
  • Do not access or copy other people's files or work without permission.
  • Respect copyright and intellectual property, avoiding software piracy and plagiarism.
  • Do not use computers to spread false information or engage in cyberbullying.
  • Respect the privacy of others online.

What is Cybersecurity?

Cybersecurity is the practice of protecting computer systems, networks, and data from unauthorized access, damage, or theft.

Common Cyber Threats

  • Malware: harmful software such as viruses, worms and ransomware that damages or takes over a system.
  • Phishing: fraudulent messages that trick users into revealing passwords or personal information.
  • Hacking: unauthorized access into a computer system or network.
  • Identity theft: illegally obtaining and using someone else's personal information.

Basic Cybersecurity Practices

  • Use strong, unique passwords and change them regularly.
  • Keep software and antivirus programs up to date.
  • Avoid clicking on suspicious links or opening unknown email attachments.
  • Do not share personal information or passwords with strangers online.
  • Back up important data regularly.

Importance of Ethics and Cybersecurity

As more of our lives move online — banking, school work, communication and business — understanding computer ethics and practicing good cybersecurity habits protects individuals and organizations from financial loss, data theft, and harm, while promoting a safer and more trustworthy digital society.
