What is Local Government?
Local government is the third tier of government in Nigeria, closest to the people, responsible for administering affairs at the grassroots (community) level.
Structure of Local Government in Nigeria
Nigeria is divided into 774 Local Government Areas (LGAs). Each is headed by a Chairman (the chief executive), supported by Councillors who represent different wards within the LGA, forming the Local Government Council.
Functions of Local Government
- Construction and maintenance of local roads, markets, and motor parks.
- Provision and maintenance of primary healthcare services.
- Registration of births, deaths and marriages.
- Collection of local rates, taxes and fees, such as market and shop rates.
- Development and management of primary education in collaboration with the state.
- Maintenance of public conveniences, sewage and refuse disposal.
Sources of Revenue for Local Government
- Statutory allocation from the Federation Account.
- Grants from state and federal governments.
- Internally generated revenue from local taxes, levies, and fees.
Importance of Local Government
Local government brings governance closer to the people, ensures grassroots development, provides a platform for citizens to participate directly in decision-making, and delivers basic services more efficiently than a distant central authority could manage alone.
