Pest and Disease Control in Crops

Meaning of Pests and Diseases

A crop pest is any organism that attacks farm crops and reduces their yield or quality, while a crop disease is an abnormal condition caused by pathogens such as fungi, bacteria, viruses or nematodes that disrupts the normal growth of a plant.

Common Crop Pests

  • Insects – grasshoppers, aphids, weevils, stem borers
  • Rodents – rats and grasscutters that destroy stored grains and tubers
  • Birds – quelea birds that attack cereal crops
  • Nematodes – microscopic worms that attack plant roots

Common Crop Diseases

  • Fungal diseases – blight, rust, mildew
  • Bacterial diseases – bacterial wilt, leaf spot
  • Viral diseases – mosaic disease, cassava mosaic virus

Effects of Pests and Diseases on Crops

They reduce yield, lower the quality of produce, increase the cost of production and, in severe cases, cause total crop failure.

Methods of Control

  • Cultural control – crop rotation, proper spacing, timely planting and weeding
  • Biological control – using natural enemies such as predators and parasites
  • Chemical control – use of pesticides, fungicides and insecticides
  • Mechanical control – hand picking of pests, use of traps and scarecrows
  • Use of resistant varieties – planting crop varieties bred to resist common pests and diseases

Summary

Effective pest and disease management combines several methods (integrated pest management) rather than relying on chemicals alone, in order to protect yield while keeping the farm and environment safe.
